As I walk along the streets of Capiz I saw a couple aging 60-70 years old. Barefooted and wearing their untidy clothes and it seems that they don’t even take a bath for a year. Seeing those faces make me feel that I’m lucky enough to have my pair of slipper. My heart really aches with that scenario. They are the people who are neglected in our society and being discriminated by some of us.
We can see them everywhere, along the streets of Roxas City, beside the Immaculate Conception Metropolitan Cathedral Church stretching their arms and begging alms. We called them beggars. They are the one who cannot afford to buy their own slippers, clothes and even shelter to shed. They are not even sure if, tomorrow they have something to eat, yet struggling to survive in this unjust world. Despite the discrimination they continue to fight and face tomorrow with courage and determination to survive.
The most special thing that we can give to them is respect and acceptance of who really they are. We need first to assess ourselves if we are that so good enough to criticize them. We need to accept the fact that none of us is perfect. We need also to respect them for us to gain their respect.
